A “Beeping Egg” Hunt (a would-be SpringFling entry)

This weekend, I had the privilege to volunteer for an event I had heard about for a couple of years: a “beeping egg” hunt. The Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation puts on a spring gathering for their clients and families with this egg hunt as the centerpiece of a festive morning in the park. I wanted to share this event with more people, so I hope this story—what was going to be my Spring Fling 2023 entry, which whoops, I missed the deadline because I don’t understand time zones apparently, lol!—does that in some small way. Hope you enjoy. (And good luck to all the actual Spring Fling entrants!)

A “Beeping Egg” Hunt

Mirabel handed her white cane to her brother. She gripped her purple basket with both hands.

“There is an egg straight ahead, Mirabel,” he whispered. “Want me to walk with you?”

“I can do it,” Mirabel said. The soft green grass was dotted with color, but for Mirabel it was hard to tell how far anything was.

At other egg hunts, she would need her brother to lead the way. Today, the eggs would lead her—well, their chimes would.

“Ready?” yelled the counselor. “Three, two, one, go!”

With that, the colorful eggs began beeping so the children from Mirabel’s Butterfly Club for Blind Children could follow their ears. Mirabel shuffled forward. As she got close, the beeping got louder. She knew exactly where to reach.

“Got one!” Mirabel yelled. Her brother cheered. She held the egg closer for a better look: purple.

Purple, she decided, was her favorite color.
